Thiazide diuretic most commonly used in the treatment of hypertension. Considered by many as a first line agent - extrapolated from results of the ALLHAT trial, which appeared to demonstrate preference to chlorthalidone. Subsequent JNC 7 guidelines promoted thiazide diuretics such as HCTZ as first line.
